Rhinoplasty is a surgery to change the shape of the nose and it is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures. It can be used to increase or reduce the size of your nose, narrow the nostril span, change the shape of the bridge or tip, or change the angle between your upper lip and nose.  It can also be used to correct an injury or a birth defect, or help alleviate breathing problems. What Happens In A Rhinoplasty Consultation?

In the initial consultation, Dr. Larry Weintstein will evaluate the structure of your face and nose, and then discuss your options. You will go over how you’d like your new nose to look, and go over your expectations. He will then explain the factors that will influence the procedure as well as the results. Some of those factors include the structure of your cartilage and nasal bones, the thickness of your skin, your age, the shape of your face, and your expectations.

How Can I Prepare For Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty specialist Dr. Larry Weinstein will provide specific instructions for you on how to best prepare for the surgery. Some guidelines include what to eat or drink and which vitamins and medications you can take. He will also tell you how to best prepare your face for the surgery. The surgery will go more smoothly if you follow the instructions he provides. It is recommended that you have someone drive you home from the hospital and help you out for the few days after surgery.

How Nose Surgery Is Performed

A Rhinoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient basis because of convenience and cost.

The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia, but depending on what you and the Doctor prefer, it can also be done with local anesthesia with or without sedation. With general anesthesia, you will be asleep throughout the entire operation. With local anesthesia, you will be awake, but insensitive to pain and relaxed.

The Rhinoplasty procedure usually takes about 1-2 hours. The surgery generally follows the following steps:

  • An incision is made at the base of the nose, or inside the nostrils to provide access to the bone and cartilage.
  • The bone and cartilage are then sculpted into shape.
  • If your nostrils are too wide, small wedges of skin are removed from the base and brought closer together.
  • If you have a hump on your nose or your nose bridge is wide, the hump is removed with a chisel and the nasal bones are brought together to form a more narrow bridge.
  • To reshape the tip of the nose, cartilage is trimmed.
  • The septum can also be trimmed to improve the angle between the upper lip and the nose.

  • Once the surgery is completed, a splint is placed to help your nose maintain the new shape.

What To Expect After Rhinoplasty Surgery

In the first twenty four hours after surgery, your nose will ache, your face will feel puffy, and you might have a dull headache. This can be controlled by medication prescribed by the doctor. Plan to remain in your bed for the first day, with your head elevated.

A small amount of bleeding in the first few days after surgery is very common and you may feel some stuffiness for the next several weeks.

You will most likely be asked not to blow your nose for the first week, so that your tissues may heal.

If your nose is packed then nasal packing will be removed after a few days, which will make you feel much more comfortable.

The swelling and the bruising around your eyes will get worse at first for the first three days. You can apply a cold compress to reduce the swelling and help you feel better. The swelling and the bruising will disappear after about two weeks.

After a week or two, all dressings, stitches and splints will be removed. Then, a small splint made of an overlay of plastic, metal or plaster and tape is applied to help the cartilage and bone so the nose can maintain its new shape.

What Are The Risks Involved With Rhinoplasty?

If your rhinoplasty is conducted by a qualified plastic surgeon, then complications are very rare and usually minor. However, with any surgery, there is a possibility for complications. Some risks include:

  • Infection
  • Nosebleed
  • Adverse reaction to anesthesia

Dr. Larry Weinstein will provide you with instructions on what to do both before and after surgery to reduce your risks.

When Can I Return To My Normal Activities After Rhinoplasty?

Most patients are able to be up and about after two days, and can return to sedentary work or school after about a week. However, it will take several weeks to be entirely up to speed.

Nose surgery specialist Dr. Larry Weinstein will provide more instructions as to when you can resume your normal activities. You will be advised to do the following:

  • Avoid jogging, bending, swimming, sexual activity, and any other activity that will increase your blood pressure for the first three weeks
  • Avoid rubbing or hitting your nose
  • Avoid getting sunburned
  • Be gentle when you wash your face and hair or use cosmetics

You will have frequent follow-up visits in the months after surgery to check the progress of your healing. Do not hesitate to call Dr. Larry Weinstein if you have any unusual symptoms or questions.
