Aftercare for Your New Breasts

ModelOur New Jersey breast augmentation practice has given more and more women the sweet satisfaction of having larger breasts. No more slouching because you have nothing to show off. It’s time to keep that chest out and show the confidence in you.

But before anything else, remember that your responsibility does not end when the surgery is completed and your plastic surgeon sends you home. You have to take care of your new breasts to make the most out of your breast augmentation procedure and to have an easy and quick recovery.

Recovery after breast augmentation

Immediately after the procedure, you should already be able to walk even without assistance. Walking is an essential post-procedure routine in order to prevent the formation of blood clots in the legs.

During this time, it is also crucial that you follow every patient care instruction that your surgeon provides to you. During your recovery, you will most likely be advised to wear compression garments and take prescription antibiotics. Your surgeon may also provide you with instructions on how to take care of your drains, if any. The recovery time for breast augmentation varies for every individual. You can recovery quickly if you follow all instructions carefully.

Your first week

  • After two to five days, you may feel stiffness and soreness in the treated area.
  • After the procedure, you will be instructed to wear a supportive bra. Your surgical dressings may already be removed after a few days.
  • Taking a shower may be permitted in about a day to a week after surgery.
  • You can return to school or work within a couple of days to one week.
  • Your doctor may advise you to avoid activities that involve lifting, pushing, or pulling. Any strenuous activity could cause pain and discomfort.

After two to six weeks

Excessive physical routines and exercises should be avoided during this time after surgery. Over the next month, you should take extreme caution when engaging in physical activities. Intimate contact should be limited according to your level of comfort.

Easy Ways to Prevent Burns

Fire and heat are always dangerous, but there’s no ignoring the fact that we somehow need them in our homes and in our daily lives. Because of this, it is our responsibility to prevent ourselves and our family from becoming burn victims.

Make your home a safer and burn-free place by applying the following precautionary measures.

The danger comes mostly from the kitchen.

Be mindful when moving around the kitchen; pay attention even to the smallest details. You can turn your cooking pots and pans in so that the handles are not easily knocked off from the stove. If possible, you may cook using the back burners of your stove. Do not allow your children to play around the kitchen while you are cooking and help them develop this habit.

Be cautious when handling hot containers and liquids.

Do not ever pass a hot drink over someone’s head. Also, ensure that hot drinks or food are not placed on the edges of your table or a counter to avoid knocking them off.

Don’t leave the iron unattended.

When you are done with ironing, never leave the hot iron on the ironing board, especially if you have children around the house. Remove the plug and keep it in a safe spot, away from fabrics and your children’s reach. You should also do the same with hair irons.

Keep your household cleaning products in a safe place.

By safe, it means away from your children’s reach. Household cleaning products usually contain chemicals that could be harmful to the body when ingested or when a person is exposed to it. Reading the labels on these products also helps.

Sunscreen works wonders.

When going outdoors, it is advised to apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 15. Since they are more sensitive to the heat of the sun, children could use sunscreen with SPF 30 at the least.

Keep Those Peepers Beautiful

image-eyelidOur eyes might just be small facial parts, but they are the windows of our souls. They can also affect our overall appearance. Drooping eyelids do not only make you look tired, but they could also make you look several years older. Here at our New Jersey plastic surgery practice, we get a lot of patients who wish to look more alert through eyelid surgery.

An eyelid surgery, also known as an eyelid tuck or blepharoplasty, is one option to choose to help you with your peeper problems. However, it does not end the moment the procedure is done. Your recovery, as well as the outcome of the treatment, will greatly depend on how you take care of yourself after surgery.

Daily care after eyelid surgery

  1. Apply eye drops in each of your eyes as advised by your doctor.
  2. Using a Q-tip, apply an antibiotic ointment over your suture lines as advised by the plastic surgeon.
  3. Keep the eye moist at night by applying a small amount of lubricant.
  4. Showering can be resumed after two days. Make sure to use a gentle shampoo to avoid irritating your surgical wounds.
  5. Any unusual signs of bleeding, especially if it persists after 10 minutes despite applying direct pressure, must be reported immediately to your physician. Do so as well in cases of pain, infection, redness, unusual drainage, and fever.

What not to do after your eyelid surgery

  1. Avoid reading or watching TV for three days.
  2. No heavy lifting for three weeks.
  3. For two weeks, avoid tweezing or plucking your eyebrows.
  4. You may already wear your glasses after a day. In the case of contacts, you have to wait for two weeks before you can put them on again.
  5. Delay coloring your hair for four weeks after the treatment.
  6. To be safe, avoid driving for one to two weeks after your eyelid surgery.
  7. Avoid putting on eye shadow, false lashes, and makeup altogether for the next 10 days.

For more information on blepharoplasty, request a personal consultation with Dr. Weinstein today by calling 908-879-2222. You may also fill out this online form to contact Dr. Weinstein. Your Ultimate Guide to Sculptra

Model 13Do you miss the days when you still had that youthful glow on your face? Here at our New Jersey facial rejuvenation practice, we can help you restore your youthful appearance. One way to achieve this is by using Sculptra. This substance will be injected directly to the parts of your face that need volume or recontouring. With Sculptra, you can regain your youthfulness and achieve natural-looking and subtle results without going under the knife and without any downtime.

Which sites can Sculptra treat?

Sculptra may be administered to certain parts of the face. It can add volume to:

  • Hollow cheeks
  • Hollow chin area
  • Hollow temples

Sculptra can also do the following:

  • Soften bony cheekbones
  • Reduce the appearance of nasolabial (nose to mouth) and melolabial (mouth to chin) lines and folds
  • Define the jawline

Is Sculptra safe to use?

The use of Sculptra for the treatment of wrinkles and fine lines has been approved by the FDA in 2009. For over ten years, it has been used extensively in the United States, Europe, Canada, and 20 other countries throughout the world.

What are the contraindications that I have to know?

Generally, Sculptra should not be used on patients who are allergic to lidocaine. Pregnant women or nursing mothers may not be able to undergo treatment, as well as individuals who have rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Sjogren’s syndrome. It is important to keep your doctor aware of any medical conditions that you currently have, especially in the case of autoimmune diseases.

Is the procedure painful?

Because Sculptra needs to be injected into the face, the patient may experience a little discomfort during injections. However, it can be minimized by the local anesthetic that is already found in the solution. A topical numbing cream may also be applied 45 minutes prior to the start of the procedure.

How will I look after treatment?

You may experience slight bruising after treatment. Moreover, the injection sites may be swollen for about a week. These signs are normal and will fade over time, and your doctor may prescribe you with medications to alleviate these symptoms. Immediately after treatment, you can already put on makeup and return to normal daily activities.

To learn more about Sculptra and to answer any questions you have about the procedure, you can request an appointment with Dr. Weinstein today by calling 908-879-2222. You may also contact Dr. Weinstein by filling out this online form. We look forward to hearing from you!

Breasts, Buttocks and Boomers Redux

Our plastics surgeons are showing that we don’t get older, we just get better.

clintonsUS plastic surgeons reported this month that growing numbers of women in their 50s and 60s are opting for surgeries to augment these body parts for aesthetic reasons. Doctors say this is a big change because these procedures were largely the province of the young until recently. “There has been a cultural shift in the population that is saying this is something I want to do,” says Jack Fisher, president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and a boomer who can empathise with his patients.

“I just turned 67… and I don’t feel 67,” he told me during a telephone interview. “I don’t feel much older than when I was 16.”

Dr Fisher says when he began practising three decades ago, candidates for aesthetic breast implants were almost all under age 40. Last year his group said 33,224 women aged 51 and older had their breasts enlarged surgically, almost 11 per cent of the total, up from 14,571, or 5 per cent of the total, a decade before. The number of women of 65 and older getting implants rose to 3,748 last year from 1,010 in 2003.

The trend is similar for buttock augmentations, which are less common in the US, but are gaining popularity (with women accounting for 98 per cent of the surgeries). Of the 11,527 people who had their posteriors padded last year, 1,220 were age 51 and over, and 300 of them were age 65 and over. By contrast, when Asaps began counting buttock augmentations in 2002, it could find only five recipients over 50 years old.

It’s easy to poke fun at these fountain-of-youth-seeking Ponce de Leons of plastic surgery. Let’s face it, when The Commodores sang the praises of curvaceous women in their 1970s hit “Brick House”, I doubt they anticipated major construction work continuing past retirement age.

But I see these women as symbols of a serious force in our public life – the forever young baby boomer getting back into the game.

One of the best recent examples comes from the sports world. Phil Jackson, who has won more championships than any other US professional basketball coach, came out of retirement this month at age 68 – he was born shortly after the war – to sign a five-year contract to serve as president of the long-suffering New York Knicks.

Mr Jackson isn’t what he used to be. The man known as the Zen Master – for practices that include encouraging his players to meditate – told reporters that he has had five surgeries in recent years for problems with his “knees and hips and other things”. But he jumped at the chance to heal the team where he began his career as a player – once the capitalists who own the club offered him $12m a year.

Another boomer who might be on her way back is Hillary Clinton. It’s no secret that the former US secretary of state has been thinking about tomorrow (and tomorrow and tomorrow). The world wants to know whether she will press ahead with a second attempt at the presidency.

Age is an issue. Were she to win, she would be 69 on inauguration day, the second-oldest president to assume office after Ronald Reagan. According to The Wall Street Journal, some members of her inner circle wish Mrs Clinton would take it easy. They reportedly worry about how she will put up with the rigours of a campaign and the inevitable talk about her husband Bill’s relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

But from a boomer perspective, I suspect the focus on Mrs Clinton’s health and past unhappiness will only spur her to run for president. A campaign would be therapeutic in this context. She would get out and about, and meet new people.

Someone would play that song again – and Mrs Clinton could hear those comforting words at the end. “Yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone,” it goes. “Don’t you look back.”

2013 Plastic Surgery Stats

Our 2013 Annual Statistics were released over the wires this morning at 9:00 AM Eastern. Our numbers this year have both good news for plastic surgeons and several news angles that should resonate with the media. Among them are:

  • There was a 6.5% increase in the total number of surgical procedures performed last year as compared to 2012. Almost 2 million procedures were performed among the core group last year
  • Americans spent $12 billion on cosmetic procedures for the first time since 2008 when the recession hit

Of that total, more than 7 billion was spent on surgical procedures and more than 5 billion was spent on nonsurgical procedures

  • Lipo was the number one procedure, increasing 16% over 2012. This is in spite of the burgeoning growth of technologies such as CoolSculpting
  • As previously stated, Buttock augmentation has increased 58% over last year and Labiaplasty increased 44% over last year
  • Injectables are way up this year:
