Body-Contouring Surgery Can Significantly
Improve Quality of Life
A 2012 report published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) revealed that post-bariatric surgery patients experienced significant improvement in their lives after having body-contouring surgery such as a New Jersey tummy tuck. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the quality of life on a long-term basis for patients who underwent bariatric surgery.
Significant Improvements
The study, led by Dr. Eva S.J. van der Beek of the University Medical Center Utrecht in Netherlands, evaluated 33 post-bariatric patients who underwent body contouring procedures, most of which involve a tummy tuck and breast augmentation. Six out of the seven quality of life categories were found to have greatly improved including intimacy, physical functioning, social network, social acceptance and mental well-being. All in all, 55 percent of the patients found the results of the surgery as very satisfactory.
Bariatric Surgery Defined
Bariatric surgery is performed in patients who are severely obese. Its downside include the appearance of loose skin after the procedure. Body-contouring surgery such as a tummy tuck is often required to be performed after the surgery to improve the appearance of overhanging skin tissues. The results of the study has proven the importance of reconstruction surgery following bariatric procedures.
