7 facts about liposuction

Sometimes excess fat deposits won’t respond to diet and exercise. That’s when liposuction can step in and reshape specific areas of the body by removing that excess fat, improving the body’s contours. Here are seven facts about this popular cosmetic surgery procedure.

Liposuction can address multiple areas at the same time. It’s perfect for removing fat from the neck, thighs, knees, hips and buttocks, calves and ankles, stomach and waistline, and the upper arms.

Liposuction can be performed with other cosmetic surgery procedures. While liposuction can be performed on its own, the most common procedures combined with liposuction include a tummy tuck, breast reduction or facelift.

Candidates for liposuction must meet specific criteria. Good candidates for liposuction include those who are in good physical health and don’t smoke. If you are an adult within 30 percent of your ideal weight and you have firm, elastic skin with good muscle tone, you are considered a good candidate.

Liposuction is not a weight loss solution. Patients should be at or near their ideal weight for liposuction to be effective. It’s also not an effective treatment for cellulite, which is dimpled skin usually found on the thighs, hips, and buttocks.

You should be getting liposuction for you, not because someone else wants you to get it done. Cosmetic surgery is highly individualized, so you shouldn’t be doing it to fit a certain image. If you have a positive outlook and realistic expectations, then you will be a good candidate for surgery.

Liposuction is performed through small incisions designed to be hidden. While you are under anesthesia, diluted local anesthesia is infused to reduce bleeding. A thin, hollow tube is inserted through the incisions to loosen the excess fat deposits with a controlled back-and-forth motion. The surgeon then suctions out loosened fat using a special surgical vacuum or syringe.

Recovery length depends on how much was treated. To help control swelling and hold the skin to your new contours, you will wear a compression garment or bandages over the treatment areas after the procedure. If a small area was treated, you may be able to return to work after a few days, but you may need a couple of weeks of recovery if a large area was treated.

What are gummy bear breast implants?

If you’ve been considering a breast augmentation for larger, fuller breasts, then you already know about saline and silicone gel implants. But have you heard about the popular implant type called gummy bear implants? Here are some things you should know about gummy bear implants.

Gummy bear breast implants maintain their shape, even when the shell ruptures. One of the reasons why gummy bear implants are so popular is that they are more cohesive than regular silicone gel implants. The higher viscosity or thicker consistency of this gel is what gives this implant its “gummy bear” name. If it’s split in half, the gel stays in place, with no drip or mess.

Regular silicone gel implants can leak, but you wouldn’t know it unless you were having imaging tests such a mammogram done. If a saline implant leaks, you will know right away because the implant will “deflate” and the salt water or saline solution will be absorbed by the body.

They are designed to be a teardrop shape. This shape of the gummy bear breast implant mimics the natural breast shape, meaning it is more tapered at the top and has more projection at the bottom to give you a more natural look and feel.

The placement of gummy bear implants requires a longer incision. Like regular silicone gel implants, these implants are pre-filled, so there’s little flexibility when it comes to inserting it into place. Saline implants start out as empty shells that are filled once they are placed within the breast pocket, which means a smaller incision can be made for insertion.

Breast augmentation can be life-altering for so many women. It’s ideal for women who believe their breasts are too small, to restore youth and volume in breasts that have “deflated” after pregnancy, hormonal changes or significant weight loss, or to make breasts more symmetrical if one breast is smaller than the other.
