Dealing with Swelling After a Tummy Tuck

If there’s one constant following a tummy tuck, it would have to be swelling, medically known as edema. At our practice in New Jersey, we inform patients who are about to have a tummy tuck that swelling should be expected post-surgery. In addition, we offer the following tips to help deal with swelling and make their tummy tuck recovery easier, quicker, and more comfortable.

Tummy Tuck in New JerseyTake steps to make sure that are you sufficiently hydrated throughout recovery.

One might think that drinking a lot of water will only exacerbate swelling. However, keep in mind that the body is made up mostly of fluids and sufficient hydration is important to flush out toxins. In addition, sufficient hydration is also important to promote regular bowel movements and consequently reduce abdominal swelling.

Pay attention to your sodium intake.

Sodium makes your body retain water. Thus, it may be best to limit your intake of sodium-rich foods. You shouldn’t stop using salt altogether, as it also plays an important role in normal body functions. Moderation is the key. A good rule of thumb when reducing sodium intake is to avoid highly processed foods that have large amounts of salt. Focus instead on consuming foods from whole sources.

Move but don’t overdo it.

Physical activity can either reduce or exacerbate swelling. Although you need to take it easy during the first few weeks following surgery, you should not be totally glued to your bed the entire day. Inactivity will increase your risk of complications such as blood clot formation and may only intensify swelling. On the other hand, it is equally important to avoid the following activities, which can lead to complications:

  • Heavy lifting
  • Bending over
  • Jogging
  • Sex
  • Reaching above your head

Wear compression garments as instructed.

The pressure in compression garments helps reduce swelling and improves blood circulation. Improved blood circulation aids in faster wound healing and helps minimize scarring.
