Beware of Fake Dermal Fillers and Practitioners

Archives

Facial FillersIn 2012, the use of hyaluronic acid as a wrinkle filler came in second in the top 5 minimally invasive procedures, trailing just behind Botox. With an increasing awareness of plastic surgery options for both men and women, wrinkle fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane and Radiesse in New Jersey are now highly in demand for those who prefer to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles without using the knife.

Dr. Larry Weinstein, a New Jersey based cosmetic surgeon, warns the public of the dangers behind fake filler injections and unqualified practitioners who perform these procedures at a very low price.

Timebomb Fillers
Last year, exclusive research on botched dermal filler cases carried out for the UK Daily Mail reported a dramatic increase in messed up facial fillers resulting in women with lifelong deformities and flaws. Furthermore, the research found out that approximately 70 percent of UK plastic surgeons have seen several patients who end up with more complicated problems from temporary skin fillers. The surgeons said that it looks like these people are not aware of the risks involving fillers which are fake and are administered by unskilled personnel.

“The popularity of fillers has gone through the roof. If it goes wrong, you can get atrociously bad reactions. The site can become infected, or it can affect the deeper tissue. There was one case where it eroded a woman’s upper lip,” said James Frame, an aesthetic plastic surgery professor at Anglia Ruskin University.

Avoiding Time Bomb Fillers
By and large, dermal fillers are substances which help rejuvenate aging skin and reduce the appearance of line and wrinkles which are commonly found near the nose and mouth. Also, these fillers could restore fullness in the cheeks and temporal areas as well as enhance definition near the jaw line.

Dr. Weinstein recommends the following tips to avoiding fillers which act like ticking time bombs (you’ll look great during the first few months but end up with undesirable side effects such as swelling, bruising and permanent scarring):

1. Choose a licensed, trained, and skilled practitioner when thinking about having dermal fillers. Check for a surgeon’s qualifications such as board certifications and the number of times he has done the procedure.

2. Choose a practitioner who provides follow-up services. It is a good practice for doctors to provide follow-up care 2 to 3 weeks post-procedure to make sure that you get the results you’re looking for.

3. Ask about the labeling of the dermal filler in which you are interested.
