We hear all the time how important it is to wear sunscreen.  However, many of us sun worshippers forego or tend to forget to slather on sunscreen anyway.   So why is sunscreen so important?

Why Sunscreen?
Apart from protecting yourself from sunburns, sunscreen slows down the aging process. You don’t have to worry as much about the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Lastly, keep in mind that unprotected skin exposure to UV radiation could significantly increase your chances of skin cancer.

In this study, regular use of sunscreen with a sun protective factor of 15 during the first 18 years of life is shown to reduce your chances of getting skin cancer by 78 percent. In addition, another study found out that sunscreen users have stronger social influence and more self-efficacy than non-users.

Maximizing Sunscreen
The following techniques are proven to maximize sunscreen use:

1. It is best to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before you go outdoors. Each application lasts for about two hours so reapply throughout your stay outside. Waterproof sunscreens have shorter periods of effectivity; they could last for up to 80 minutes.

2. The rule of thumb is to use at least SPF 30 for the body and SPF 15 for the face and lips.

3. Pay special attention to the exposed parts of your body when applying sunscreen: face, arms, legs and yes, the ears!
