What to expect from breast lift surgery

Archives

Pregnancy, nursing, weight changes, aging and gravity all take their toll on a woman’s breasts. If you’ve noticed your breasts have lost their elasticity, firmness and shape, then a breast lift may be right for you. Here are some fast facts about what you can expect from breast lift surgery:

You’ll need transportation. A breast lift is an outpatient surgery that takes about 1-3 hours. You’ll need someone to drive you to and from your surgery and to stay for you the first night following surgery. This is because you have had anesthesia and will be tired and need monitoring.

Your surgeon will help you determine the incision pattern. Each patient is unique. The size and shape of your breasts, the size and position of each areola, the degree of sagging and the quality of the skin, amount of skin and elasticity all factor into which incision pattern and technique is used during your surgery.

There are three common incision patterns, all of which begin by encircling each areola. The lollipop-shape incision goes around each areola and vertically down to the breast crease. The anchor-shaped pattern starts by going around each areola, vertically down to the breast crease and horizontally along the crease.

The breasts are lifted reshaped to create a more youthful appearance. Underlying breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to improve contour and firmness. Areolae may be reduced around the perimeter if they are large to be more balanced with the breast size and shape, and the nipple and areola are repositioned. Excess breast skin is removed, and remaining skin is tightened before incisions are closed with sutures, skin adhesives or surgical tape.

You’ll see immediate results. You will be able to see results immediately after surgery. As swelling subsides and scars begin to fade, you’ll continue to see results improve.

You can retain long-term results with proper care. Your breasts will continue to change due to aging and gravity, but the results of surgery are long-lasting. You can maintain your look longer if you follow a healthy lifestyle and maintain your weight. Too much weight gain or loss can negatively impact the appearance.
